Family Traditions Essay It was going to be a bad Christmas. Nothing could be done to salvage it. The little tree (the only one we could afford) was bare, surrounded by its fallen needles. The Christmas presents were not much; Santa did not have the means to give the children what they had on their Christmas lists. It was going to be awful, the season of joy and giving was corrupted, nothing in the tiny apartment even resembled Christmas. The little, dead, bare Christmas tree was prophesying what the season would really bring that year to the family, almost nothing. How could they save the holiday? It seemed almost hopeless, but it turned into my family’s most loved and fun family ritual. To this day, I cannot remember a Christmas morning where Santa did not fill the entire living room floor with balloons. Every Christmas morning my family wakes up to a jungle of balloons; long skinny ones that look like baseball bats, the regular round ones, some that have a special design on the rubber, and others that are so tiny we do not notice them until we hear a big bang when we accidently step on them. This Christmas tradition is the one that saved Christmas back when I was really young. My parents, in an effort to save the holiday, had rushed to the local corner store and bought some balloons. The balloons were cheap, took a long time to blow up, and made that Christmas and every Christmas after that so much more exciting and fun than if my parents had been able to afford all the gifts we had on our list to Santa that year. I have always known that spending time with your family is important, but I never had a testimony of its importance in my life. When I read the words â€Å"wholesome family recreation† in the Proclamation to the Family, it surprised me. I want to better understand why the Lord would have us spend time together so that I can strengthen my testimony of â€Å"wholesome family recreation.† I have to admit that this is an aspect of family life that I have never developed a â€Å"testimony† in. The experience listed above has touched my life deeply, but it never struck me as a way to help my family grow. Elder Bruce R. McConkie said, â€Å"We know that the Lord operates through families. He himself lives in the family unit; it is his eternal system of government in heaven and on earth, and he always offers as much of his own system to men as they are willing to receive† (McConkie, p.35). What a wonderful thought! Families are so amazing, they are pieces of heaven and visions of eternity that we can experience here on earth, given to us from our Heavenly Father. Since families are such an important asset in this life it is vital for us that we learn to appreciate them and to utilize the time we have together. Adler said that â€Å"the most fundamental human need is to belong† (Albert and Popkin, p.18). We can show our families how much they mean to us and how much we need them in our life by spending time with them, getting to know each individual and compromising for each other. According to Wolin and Bennett family rituals are â€Å"vital to the life of the healthy family† (Wolin and Bennett, p. 407). When we take the time to plan and accomplish family recreation, we make that experience more special and meaningful because we, as a family, chose to spend time togther. Opportunities like this give the family a closeness that is deeper than love, it makes a family that likes one another and enjoys the other members. When parents and siblings take time out of their lives to go on a vacation or participate in family prayer it shows the other members of the family that they are more important than a job, school work, or friends. Some family scholars have used the term â€Å"metaphor† when describing aspects of family rituals (Imber-Black, et al) because the effect of the ritual is more then just â€Å"hanging out† together. The time that we take eating meals as a unity, praying with one voice, and sharing weekly activities invite the spirit into that house. The house that makes time for each other is that house that appears to welcome its members. In a home the overwhelming feeling is love because the members have to sacrifice for the other members in the family. In the text for this class there is a subtitle in chapter 11 called â€Å"self-sacrifice,† it talks about how we have to sacrifice for a successful family (Dollahite, p.158). When we sh are daily, weekly, and yearly traditions it is a way for us to show the other members in our family that we are willing to sacrifice for them. My mom never buys anything for herself because she would rather her children have more than her. This visible giving of self by my mother has made me love her and appreciate me more because it shows me that I am special to her. My dad always (well, almost always) eats dinner with us. He is a lawyer and a bishop and he does not have much free time. Nevertheless, he puts off work so that he can spend those few minutes with his children. His sacrifice of time shows me how much he truly cares about my family because he is willing to stop and eat with us. When we look back on the times that we have spent in wholesome family recreation the experiences are usually more cheerful and optimistic. The rituals provide a reservoir of goodwill, unity, trust, and confidence. They make the world resemble a more comfortable place because it gives us a place where we fit in. (Burr, et al., p.332) Looking back to when I was growing up I got into many fights with my little siblings and my parents, but when I remember the times that we planned to spend together most of my memories are happy, energizing ones. I know that I did not grow up in the perfect household, but when we stopped to spend time together and enjoy one another’s presence it helped build felicitous memories. Now I realize that family traditions and rituals are an indispensable aspect of family life. I can say that I have a testimony in the importance of wholesome family recreation. When I start my own family, I want to continue and build new rituals so that we can build lasting and meaningful relationships. The Proclamation to the Family is incredibly insightful, who would have thought such a minor thing was really an ingredient to ha ving a successful family.

Here, the instructional designer is fully responsible for performing profound research of the current learning performance, and listing the tasks of the curriculum. These tasks are to be compared and related to the target audience’s skills, abilities, and knowledge. Analysis stage is designed to see the gap between what people know and what their job or curriculum requires them to know. At this stage of curriculum development, sample tasks may include needs assessment, problem identification, and / or task analysis (McGiff, 2000). In the design phase, the instructional designer’s main task is to decide, how the required knowledge will be delivered to the target audience. In other words, â€Å"the instructional developer develops a detailed plan of instruction that includes selecting the instructional methods and media and determining the instructional strategies† (McGiff, 2000). This stage requires developing, reviewing, and analyzing instructional objectives. Instructional materials should be reviewed, too, to ensure that they correlate with the predetermined and approved learning performance objectives. The instructional designer may also be involved into writing objectives, developing test items, planning instruction, and identifying resources (McGiff, 2000). In the development phase of the ADDIE model the instructional materials are authored and produced. This is the central element of the formative evaluation process and requires that lesson materials and media for delivering the learning information are created, analyzed, and integrated into the learning process (Allen, 2006). At this stage of instructional design process, the developed instructional plan should be revised. Revision is the final step of the development phase, when â€Å"instructional developers validate each unit and / or module of instruction and its associated instructional materials as they are developed† (Allen, 2006). Any identified deficiencies should be corrected before the instructional developer passes on to the next phase. To guarantee the validity of instructional materials, instructional designers are recommended to perform internal review of instructional materials’ accuracy and to revise the most problematic units based on the results of the formative and summative evaluation (Allen, 2006). At the next stage (implementation), the instructional project is incorporated into the real learning context. The whole instructional system is checked under operational conditions (McGiff, 2000). Student comments may serve the basis for reviewing certain or all elements of the curriculum. Evaluation is the final stage and is the final set of activities aimed at developing viable, valid, and measurable learning course. Those displaced for military or political reasons have often wanted a right to refuge under a state that will protect them or guarantee their fundamental rights. In the first half of the twentieth century, a large numbers of refugees fled from Nazi Germany, Palestine, and the Soviet bloc, and in 1951 a legal definition of refugee was established under the Geneva Convention. It is from the second half of the twentieth century, however, that international conflict and tension created ever greater numbers of refugees seeking shelter in a more secure home. This has been divan, in large part, by the ethnic basis of much military and political conflict, which has meant that whole populations have been forced to find a save home. In addition, the diverse population is now one of the unique features of Canadian society. In the 1991 survey has shown that more than 30% of Canadians were an origin other than British or French. But that percentage is most heavily concentrated in Ontario and western Canada , but rural areas, small towns like Quebec and Atlantic are home to fewer foreign-born people than is the rest of Canada. In rural Quebec, for example, the vast majority of the population was not only born in Canada but so were their parents, grandparents and great grandparents. By contrast, approximately 90% of foreign-born Canadians live in Canadas 15 largest cities. But, here again, the distribution of foreign-born is uneven. Some provinces, like Quebec (outside Montreal), have relatively fewer foreign born. On the other hand, 30% of all Vancouver residents and 38% of all Toronto residents (more than a million people in Toronto alone) were born outside Canada. Therefore, accordingly, to the researches, Toronto and Vancouver may have the most cultural, racial and ethnical minorities in Canada. But they do not stand al one. The cultural mix in other Canadian cities may be different, but pluralism is a fact of Canadian society. Official policy in Canada focuses the need to assimilate racial minorities into an all-embracing mainstream culture. The implementation of this policy has shown that these liberal assumptions have not gone unchallenged. In fact, from the 1960s, state policies in Canada became more restrictive in relation to immigration, as racial thinking became a more marked feature of official thinking. Some of Canadians do not supported multiculturalism. For example, in English-speaking areas, some people worried that multiculturalism would divide Canadians rather than unite them. Others in Quebec protested that multiculturalism was designed to undermine Quebec nationalism, but many other Canadians, supported the policy, and they saw it as recognition of a pluralism that was a fact of Canadian life. The multiculturalism policy has to relate to visible minorities, so these new communities are less worried about understanding of their values in Canada because they look to the multiculturalism policy as aid in the elimination of discrimination for equal access to jobs, housing and education. In 1981, federal multiculturalism officials established a unit devoted to race relations in Canada. Later this unit expanded to make race relations as a primary focus of the multicultural policy. Today, most provinces and many municipalities have followed this procedure and mainly focus on education, policing, social services and protection of human rights within their areas of jurisdiction. Finally, most federal multicultural programs stress on institutional change, race relations and citizen integration and participation. Multiculturalism means the diversity of the racial and cultural mix, the need for tolerance and accepting one another as fellow Canadians. By globalization and the ever-increasing movement of people from one country to another, the challenge of appreciating and accommodating cultural differences has become a universal experience, so the government policy would be sensitive to the needs of both long-time residents and the newly arrived with the greatest success. Canadas future depends on the commitments of all its citizens to a unified Canadian identity. Therefore, multiculturalism in Canada become a significant issue and it has a deep root in the society.
