ENG COMP II Dec. 10, 2008 Never Give Up â€Å"The Rookie† is a 2002 Walt Disney movie that is based on the real-life story of Jim Morris that stars Dennis Quaid in the lead role. â€Å"The Rookie† is also a movie that reflects not only our nations’ culture, but also the collective attitude we have towards believing in an individuals’ dreams. But Jim’s team, The Owls, know their coach is a great ball player and thus make a deal with him: if they win the district championship they want him to try out for a major-league team. Going from worst to first, the team makes it to state and Jim is forced to live up to his end of the deal. At the age of 35 he makes it onto a minor league team and now has to deal with the pressures of a â€Å"younger mans’† sport, life on the road and being separated from his wife and family. The pressures build and like a typical Disney movie, the dream becomes reality at what would seem to be the absolute last moment. Quaid, as Jim Morris, would then take the mound that very same night while his friends and family watched, some from their homes but most from the stands. Morris would then continue to play as one of the relief pitchers for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays over the next two seasons before officially calling it quits. The theme for this movie is obvious and simple: Never give up on your dreams, for it is never too late to believe in them. From the beginning of the movie we see Morris as an adolescent in a variety of locations and weather conditions, but we always see him pitching a baseball. That is until his mother cries out to him saying: â€Å"Jimmy, your father and I need to talk to you. † By now Jimmy is well aware of what his father, who is in the U. S. Marines, is going to say. For the fourth time they are relocating and Jimmy has to put his pitching dreams on hold. That is until his father gets a permanent duty station in Big Lake, Texas. With a bit more exposition and rising action Jimmy meets Henry Sampson in the town store where he learns the town doesn’t care much for baseball, but they do care about something else – dreams. Henry then relates the story of the towns’ very beginnings and how a man with dreams of finding oil â€Å"right under his feet† got the financial, and spiritual, help he needed from two nuns. The movie steps back in time to 1921 where the camera follows the nuns as they are shown blessing the field with rose pedals and reciting a prayer to Saint Rita, the patron saint of impossible dreams. While the men waited for the oil that would eventually come, they passed the time playing baseball. A few of the men were able to fulfill yet another dream as they got drafted into the major leagues. After hearing the story, the camera follows a teenage Jimmy riding his bike to the field where, on camera close up, he brushes off the pitchers’ strip and with a look of determination and steadfastness he digs into the mound with his sneaker and looks at the original oil well. A camera close up shows the sign on the well, ‘SANTARITA No. 1 Completed May 27, 1923’. When it pans back to Jimmy, time has moved forward 20 years, still standing on that very same mound but now as a full grown man however his look is not the same and the well has been out of operation for quite some time. His close up look and facial expression tells us of a dream, like the oil well, that got ‘dried up’ before its’ time as he digs his boots into the pitchers’ mound. However, as a reminder that not all is as it seems to be, the camera focuses on Jimmy’s truck where a medallion of Saint Rita hangs from the rear-view mirror. From the man who dreamed of finding oil, to the nuns who dreamed of getting their moneys’ worth, to the town that was founded and thrived on those dreams, to Jimmy, and to everyone whoever was or has been, they all have an individual dream they are willing to pursue. They are not unique in this, as it is something that can be traced to, and shared with, the founding fathers of our nation. They had a dream for freedom and representation that they were willing to fight and die for. Two world wars and countless others were fought for one main ideal – to keep the dream alive. Whether the dream be for territory or freedom from oppression, it does not matter. Keeping, pursuing and accomplishing the dream is within everyone of us and, as is the case with Jim Morris, it does not matter how long it takes; dreams can be fulfilled. The movie â€Å"The Rookie† serves to remind us that in todays’ culture that while our dreams may be individual they can, and often do, reach father than our imagination could ever anticipate. In our modern day, dreams are fulfilled everywhere by those willing and determined enough to make them happen. While these dreams may be on an individual basis, they can be, and are often, shared across the nation. One only has to look at the world of sports to bear witness to some of the most compelling individual efforts that have a nation dreaming right along with them. Lance Armstrong won the grueling Tour de France bicycle race seven times after beating testicular cancer. The 2008 Summer Olympics, where the best of the best across the world come to compete, saw Michael Phelps win a world-record eight Gold medals in swimming. To accomplish his dream Phelps would have to swim two major races a day, each day, for four days straight. And a majority of Americans would watch and be with him stroke for stroke cheering him on, praying for the dream that would come true. Closer to home, Mary Alison Milford, a Fayetteville native, competed in the Paralympics on the U. S. Wheelchair Basketball team that defeated Germany for the Gold Medal. I dare anyone to attend a championship game anywhere, and to tell me that they could not physically feel the home-town audiences’ presence. He told me that when I get home, talk with your parents about if you really want to play or not. Family Traditions Essay It was going to be a bad Christmas. Nothing could be done to salvage it. The little tree (the only one we could afford) was bare, surrounded by its fallen needles. The Christmas presents were not much; Santa did not have the means to give the children what they had on their Christmas lists. It was going to be awful, the season of joy and giving was corrupted, nothing in the tiny apartment even resembled Christmas. The little, dead, bare Christmas tree was prophesying what the season would really bring that year to the family, almost nothing. How could they save the holiday? It seemed almost hopeless, but it turned into my family’s most loved and fun family ritual. To this day, I cannot remember a Christmas morning where Santa did not fill the entire living room floor with balloons. Every Christmas morning my family wakes up to a jungle of balloons; long skinny ones that look like baseball bats, the regular round ones, some that have a special design on the rubber, and others that are so tiny we do not notice them until we hear a big bang when we accidently step on them. This Christmas tradition is the one that saved Christmas back when I was really young. My parents, in an effort to save the holiday, had rushed to the local corner store and bought some balloons. The balloons were cheap, took a long time to blow up, and made that Christmas and every Christmas after that so much more exciting and fun than if my parents had been able to afford all the gifts we had on our list to Santa that year. I have always known that spending time with your family is important, but I never had a testimony of its importance in my life. When I read the words â€Å"wholesome family recreation† in the Proclamation to the Family, it surprised me. I want to better understand why the Lord would have us spend time together so that I can strengthen my testimony of â€Å"wholesome family recreation.† I have to admit that this is an aspect of family life that I have never developed a â€Å"testimony† in. We can show our families how much they mean to us and how much we need them in our life by spending time with them, getting to know each individual and compromising for each other. When we take the time to plan and accomplish family recreation, we make that experience more special and meaningful because we, as a family, chose to spend time togther. Opportunities like this give the family a closeness that is deeper than love, it makes a family that likes one another and enjoys the other members. When parents and siblings take time out of their lives to go on a vacation or participate in family prayer it shows the other members of the family that they are more important than a job, school work, or friends. Some family scholars have used the term â€Å"metaphor† when describing aspects of family rituals (Imber-Black, et al) because the effect of the ritual is more then just â€Å"hanging out† together. The time that we take eating meals as a unity, praying with one voice, and sharing weekly activities invite the spirit into that house. Before I started researching this topic, I did not think that having a testimony of recreation could be possible; testimonies were about tithing and the atonement. Now I realize that family traditions and rituals are an indispensable aspect of family life. I can say that I have a testimony in the importance of wholesome family recreation. When I start my own family, I want to continue and build new rituals so that we can build lasting and meaningful relationships. The Proclamation to the Family is incredibly insightful, who would have thought such a minor thing was really an ingredient to ha ving a successful family.

Instructional design requires systematic approach. Until present, the ADDIE model has been forming the basis of practical instructional design. The five stages of the ADDIE model create a logical sequence of actions that ensure that the newly designed learning process is clear, consistent, and can be evaluated through the prism of specific measurable learning outcomes. The ADDIE model is one of the central elements of Instructional Systems Design. â€Å"ISD is a process to ensure learning does not occur in a haphazard manner. [†¦] The responsibility of the instructional designed is to create an instructional experience, which ensures that the learners will achieve the goals of instruction† (Allen, 2006). The ADDIE model is the systemic approach towards instructional design; it consists of five essential phases. The sequence of these phases and the ability to follow the principles of the ADDIE model determines the success of any learning process. Analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation are the five processes integrally linked into one central element named the ADDIE model. Analysis is the first stage of instructional design process. The ADDIE model refers to analysis as the process during which instructional designers â€Å"define the needs and constraints† of the instructional process, the target audience, the knowledge, and other elements related to instructional design (McGiff, 2000). Here, the instructional designer is fully responsible for performing profound research of the current learning performance, and listing the tasks of the curriculum. These tasks are to be compared and related to the target audience’s skills, abilities, and knowledge. Analysis stage is designed to see the gap between what people know and what their job or curriculum requires them to know. At this stage of curriculum development, sample tasks may include needs assessment, problem identification, and / or task analysis (McGiff, 2000). In the design phase, the instructional designer’s main task is to decide, how the required knowledge will be delivered to the target audience. In other words, â€Å"the instructional developer develops a detailed plan of instruction that includes selecting the instructional methods and media and determining the instructional strategies† (McGiff, 2000). This stage requires developing, reviewing, and analyzing instructional objectives. Instructional materials should be reviewed, too, to ensure that they correlate with the predetermined and approved learning performance objectives. The instructional designer may also be involved into writing objectives, developing test items, planning instruction, and identifying resources (McGiff, 2000). In the development phase of the ADDIE model the instructional materials are authored and produced. This is the central element of the formative evaluation process and requires that lesson materials and media for delivering the learning information are created, analyzed, and integrated into the learning process (Allen, 2006). At this stage of instructional design process, the developed instructional plan should be revised. Revision is the final step of the development phase, when â€Å"instructional developers validate each unit and / or module of instruction and its associated instructional materials as they are developed† (Allen, 2006). Any identified deficiencies should be corrected before the instructional developer passes on to the next phase. To guarantee the validity of instructional materials, instructional designers are recommended to perform internal review of instructional materials’ accuracy and to revise the most problematic units based on the results of the formative and summative evaluation (Allen, 2006). At the next stage (implementation), the instructional project is incorporated into the real learning context. The whole instructional system is checked under operational conditions (McGiff, 2000). Student comments may serve the basis for reviewing certain or all elements of the curriculum. Implementation is actually the tryout for the instruction that has been designed during analysis, design, and development phases of the ADDIE design process. Evaluation is the final stage and is the final set of activities aimed at developing viable, valid, and measurable learning course. At this stage, the instructional developer determines the adequacy of the instruction as related to the operational conditions under which knowledge should be delivered. It should be noted that evaluation is not only the last phase of the ADDIE model; evaluation is a continuous process that takes place throughout the instructional project’s life cycle, and requires implementing formative, summative, and operational evaluation procedures at all stages of instructional design process. It is difficult, and probably, unreasonable to decide which of the five ADDIE’s stages is the most important. However, I think that the development phase is the central element of the whole instructional process. It is the core and the essence of the instructional design model. Development opens unlimited opportunities for designers; development creates the major challenges designers must face to ensure that the new instructional project can further be implemented in the real learning environment. Development reflects the instructional designer’s ability to analyze previous steps and to look several steps ahead. Ultimately, development forms the basis for the implementation and evaluation activities within the ADDIE framework.
